Affenpinscher

The French describe him as the ‘mustached little devil’ owing to Affenpinscher’s mischievous traits. The wiry-haired terrier like dog makes a good house pet as it is not just intelligent but also cordial towards other house animals. Affenpinschers have long eyebrows and big beards and are visually exquisite but also tough in nature as they were bred to chase vermin.

History and Domestication

Affenpinscher is believed to be oldest dog breeds and first appeared in Germany in 17th century. However, these dogs were much bigger then.

This breed was initially bred to act as pest control in kitchens and stables as these dogs managed to keep rats at bay. The breed later became a favorite of rich and famous.

Standard Physical Characteristics

The breed has distinctive appearance common with terriers. Their fur is coarse and wiry which is generally black and grey in color and is rather long. It has a small head with a short muzzle, dark eyes and small ears. Affenpinschers have a trademark ‘monkey- like’ expression which is enhanced by their protruding lower lip.

Care, Grooming and Health

Their coat requires combing and brushing once or twice a week. Sometimes it needs clipping and plucking too but it should never be plucked too short as it damages the coat and may take several years to recover. Generally a dog-trimming specialist is needed for the same but with proper care and instructions, you can do it too. This breed also sheds very little.
The dog also needs daily walks and if he doesn’t, he may be prone to some behavioral problems. You will also need to play with them to take care of their exercise needs. But there is no substitute for daily walking.
Healthwise, this breed is prone to slipped stifle, fractures, and open fontanel, PDA and respiratory problems.

Living Conditions

Affenpinschers are okay with an active lifestyle and are good for apartment life. They are very active inside and yards are okay too. However, this breed is sensitive to extreme temperatures and extra warm temperature damages their coat.

Temperament

Affenpinschers have terrier-like qualities and when raised with other pets and dogs, they normally tend to get along with them. The breed is bold and inquisitive but also loves monkeying around owing to their mischievous and playful qualities. He may seem like a lively little dog but he will quickly become an authoritarian if not given proper boundaries, rules and training. Affenspinschers are friendly and amusing and love the company of their family. They are quick learners too but should be kept away from children. Often people treat them as small dogs and do not train them properly which leads to negative behavior in this breed. Affenpinschers tend to bark and climb and do well with families who prefer entertainment.
