Often called French Mastiff or Bordeaux Bulldog, these dogue de Bordeaux are relatively shorted than other mastiffs. Though this breed is very popular in France, this is not where it originated.

History and Domestication
There are several theories about the origin of Dogue de Bordeaux. Some believe that it may be descendent of Spanish dogs from Burgos while others say that it descended from Bulldog, Tibetan Mastiff and the Greek and roman Molossus that were brought to Europe by the Alans.
This dog was used a personal bodyguard and cattle driver by the end of middle ages. Later it served as a war dog, cattle herder, hunter of boars, bears and a flock guardian. The breed is very popular in France.
Standard Physical Characteristics
The French mastiff or dogue de Bordeaux is shorter and stockier mastiff. The head is wrinkled, massive and broad. The short muzzle is wide, powerful and thick with a well-defined stop. The large nose has wide-open nostrils. The color of the nose depends on the mask of the dog. Like other bulldogs, the upper lip hangs well below the jaw and the thick skin of the neck is quite loose and forms a dewlap. The eyes are set wide-apart and can be from hazel to dark brown in color depending on the color of the dog. The ears are in proportion to the body and hang down. The deep and broad chest reaches lower than the elbows. The legs are muscular.
Care, Grooming and Health
Very little grooming is required for this breed. Combing or brushing once in a while will do the required. Dogue is an average shedder.
This breed needs lots of exercise including long daily walks. If they do not get enough mental and physical exercise, they may show behavioral problems.
This breed is generally healthy but some of them can be prone to hip dysplasia, epilepsy, heart problems and hyperkeratosis. They often have cesareans.
Living Conditions
These dogs will do okay in an apartment if sufficiently exercised. As they are very active indoors, a yard will not be necessary.
Temperament
Dogue de Bordeaux has a calm and good temperament. The extremely loyal and patient dog is completely devoted to its family. It is an excellent watch dog and is fearless while confronting strangers. These dogs should be socialized at an early stage to avoid them being aggressive with other dogs later. In spite of its fearsome and intimidating appearance, it is a gentle dog and gets along well with children and family. However it should be noted that it is a powerful animal and is not meant for inexperienced owners. The leader must define the lines clearly.
