The Entlebucher Mountain Dog is a native Switzerland dog and the smallest amongst the four tri-colored Swiss mountain dogs. This is a medium-sized, strong but compact dog with a short and hard tri-colored coat. Though it is primarily a herding and all-purpose dog, this breed excels at competitive sports too and is an enthusiastic and willing partner in any sort of athletic activity.

History and Domestication
The dog is named after the Lucerne region of Switzerland. This is the smallest of the mountain dogs. Though its origins are not confirmed, it is considered to be descended from the grounding and fighting mastiffs of the Roman legions. This is a very popular breed in its home country but rarely seen outside. Historically, these dogs were used by Swiss farmers to mow cows and pastures. Their keen intelligence and agility also made them useful in management of other large animals such as horses and hogs.
Standard Physical Characteristics
The Entlebucher Mountain dog is a square and sturdy dog with features of a typical working dog. These are compact but strong dogs. They have small and triangular ears which are rather small and lovely brown eyes. The head is in proportion to the body with a strong and flat skull. the jaw is long, well-formed and powerful. The feet are compact and support its muscular body. The coat is tricolor and has white patches on chest, blaze, Toes and tail-tip. The tan always lies somewhere between white and black. The tail can be dicked sometimes.
Care, Grooming and Health
This dog is easy to groom. Regular brushing and combing will be required. Bathe or dry shampoo only when necessary. This breed sheds moderately.
Entlebucher dogs need to be taken on long daily walks where they are made to heel beside or after the master. They can also be taken on jogs and runs.
This is generally a healthy breed with no heredity health problems.
Living Conditions
This dog is not recommended for an apartment life. They are relatively inactive indoors and a small yard will be required. They are not meant for causal owners as they have exercise requirements.
Temperament
The Entlebucher Mountain dog is a people-dog and loves to be surrounded by his people and friends. These dogs are lively, persistent and self-assured. They are determined and protective of their family. However, they can be reserved with strangers. This is an active and alert dog that was used as a cattle driver and is now being used to guard love stock and as a pet. The Entles need calm, firm and consistent pack leaders who can properly communicate with them and lay down the rules.
