The German Shepherd dog originated in Karlsruhe, Germany in 1899 due to the combined efforts of Captain Max von Stephanitz and many others. The aim was to develop a responsive, handsome and obedient dog. The GSD was created by crossing shorthaired, longhaired and wirehaired local farm and herding dogs. In April 1899, the first German Shepherd dog was registered. The breed was further popularized by movies like Rin-Tin-Tin and Strongheart where GSD were used.

Standard Physical Characteristics

The German Shepherd is a well-proportioned, powerful and muscular dog. It has a sturdy and muscular body that is slightly elongated. The head is in proportion to the body and the forehead is slightly rounded. The nose is often black but sometimes can be blue or liver. The almond shaped eyes are dark but not protruding. The ears are wider at base but pointed upright. The shoulders and front legs are muscular.

Care, Grooming and Health

This breed sheds hair constantly and is a seasonally heavy shedder. To avoid having everywhere, you must brush them daily. Bathe only when necessary as doing it in excess can cause skin irritation. Also keep checking their ears and trim their claws on a regular basis. The German Shepherd craves challenge and vigorous exercise. They have high energy needs and require some kind of training. They need to be taken on long daily walks. You can take them out for jogging or let them run alongside your bicycle. Most of them love playing Frisbee or ball. They need to be occupied with a task and daily exercise and play session along with obedience training will take care of it. Most of the lines suffer from hip and elbow dysplasia, blood disorders, bloating, epilepsy, digestive problems, chronic eczema, dwarfism and flea allergies.

Living Conditions

The German Shepherd will do fine in an apartment if kit is provided with daily exercise. They are quite inactive indoors and a large yard will be required.

Temperament

The extremely calm and courageous German Shepherds are often used as guard and working dogs. They are cheerful, obedient and always willing to learn. These dogs are extremely brave and loyal. They will gladly sacrifice their lives for their human pack. GSDs are quick learners and are always up for a challenge. These dogs are very fond of their people and should not be left alone for too long. They can be wary of strangers but only bark when they feel it’s necessary. Socialize them early. They need firm and authoritative leaders.
