Mastiff

The Mastiff is one of the biggest and ancient dog breeds around today. About 5000 years ago, this behemoth was known to be a ferocious warrior and was much different than the benevolent Mastiff we see today. The dog loves being around his people and is a good combination of grandeur, docility and courage.

History and Domestication

Drawings in Egyptian monuments as early as 3000 BC depict ancient Mastiffs. Even Caesar is said to have noticed the giant and fearless Mastiff as it fought alongside the British soldiers in 55BC. Impressed by the breed’s courage he brought a pack back to Rome and forced them to be a part of bull, lion and gladiator fights. These dogs also became popular with English peasants to look after their cattle and protect them from attacking animals.

Standard Physical Characteristics

The Mastiff is a huge dog. It has a heavy, large and square-head with a well-pronounced stop. The muzzle is long and the nose is dark in color. The eyes are medium in size, dark brown to hazel in color and set well-apart. The V-shaped ears are small and dark and set in proportion to the skull. The tail has a wide base, high set and tapers to a point.

Care, Grooming and Health

The coat is short-haired and smooth and quite easy to look after. It needs brushing with a firm bristle brush and for a gleaming finish it can be rubbed with a piece of towel. Bathe or dry shampoo only when necessary. The Mastiff sheds moderately.

The Mastiffs can be lazy but will be happy to receive regular exercise and will stay fitter too. Like all breeds, they too need to be taken on daily walks as it is a dog’s nature to walk. While in public, make sure they are leashed. The Mastiffs are prone to bloat, hip dysplasia, gastric torsion, CHD, elbow dysplasia and PRA. Feed them two or three small meals a day rather than one large meal.

Living Conditions

The Mastiffs will do okay in an apartment if enough amount of exercise is provided. They are inactive indoors and a small yard will suffice.

Temperament

The Mastiff is a powerful and massive dog with varying dominance levels. However it is often known as a gentle giant. These are born guards and will defend their territory and family silently as it is not I their nature to bark much. A well socialized dog will still be politely aloof from strangers but if it senses any danger it will step up. They generally tend to corner intruders or any threatening elements. They do have an intimidating outlook but they are quite sensitive and can become fearful and shy if mishandled. The love children but are better suited for older children.
