With its wild markings, spotted coat and large size, the Bengal cat looks a lot like a wild cat but it a domestic cat. However, one of the ancestors of this cat was the small, wild Asian Leopard cat. These cats were created trough a cross between the wild Asian Leopard cat and small shorthaired domestic cats. This cat gets its name from its ancestors Felis bengalensis which is the scientific name for the wild leopard cat. The first cross was made by Jean Mill, a breeder in California.

Standard Physical Characteristics

The Bengals are medium to large cats, with males generally being larger than females. A healthy cat will be well-muscled with an athletic appearance. The whole body is a balanced one and none of the feature of the Bengal cat should appear exaggerated. These cats are most noted for their rich and luxurious, soft coat which can either be marbled r spotted. Some of them even have glittered coats which creates an iridescent impression.

Care, Grooming and Health

The short and thick coat of a Bengal is easy to care for. Weekly combing or brushing will remove dead hair and redistribute skin oils. Bathe them only when necessary. Brush their teeth regularly to avoid dental diseases. Also keep eyes and ears clean and wipe them off with a damp cloth.

This is an athletic and agile breed and loves to play. If they ever have a choice between choosing a static toy or a ‘wild’ one, they would undoubtedly go for the ‘wild’ one. This breed is prone to hip dysplasia, PRA, distal neuropathy and flat-chested kitten syndrome.

Living Conditions

These cats always want to be with you, no matter where! This is where there action is and these cats are all about ‘action’. These cats are ideal for families looking for mischievous, funny, beautiful and rambunctious pet.

Temperament

The Bengal is an active and athletic cat. These cats are fun to live with but their high intelligence can often be challenging for the owners. The talkative, friendly, confident cat is always alert and nothing can ever escape his notice. He loves playing fetch and learns new tricks like a pro. He loves playing in water so keep aquarium out of his reach. On some rare occasion when he isn’t running around in the house, he’ll be parched on your lap.
