The strong Kurilian Bobtail has a wild appearance and despite the looks, it is a gentle cat. The brawny cat has substantial boning and is one of the 13 natural breeds recognized by TICA. These cats have a well-balanced character and are outgoing and very people-oriented. You can usually find them perched on the highest point in the house as they love keeping an eye on things going around them.

History and Domestication
The Kurilian’s origins can be traced back to the Russian Islands of Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands. It is believed that these cats with short tails have been present on the islands for over 200 years and were brought from Central Russia somewhere in the 20th century. These cats became popular domestic cats in Russia due to their hunting abilities. Due to their easy temperament they gained popularity in Europe.
Standard Physical Characteristics
The Kurilian Bobtail is a brawny and medium-sized cat. The hearty cat is well-built and well-proportioned which gives it a defining appearance when compared to other breeds. The large head has moderate wedge and wide at the cheekbones. The walnut-shaped eyes are rounded at the bottom and oval on the top. The triangular ears are medium-sized, wider at the base and slope slightly forward. Another noticeable characteristic of this breed is the pom-pom appearance of their tails. Each cat has a truly unique tail and it is impossible to find two cats with identical tails. Due to this diversity, there is an added charm to this breed. The short and bust tails can be shaped like a snag, whisk or spiral.
Care, Grooming and Health
Like other cat breeds, the Kurilian Bobtails can take care of their body. The soft and silky coat doesn’t matt and can be taken care of easily. Comb once a week to remove dead hair. Check eyes are ears regularly and brush their teeth weekly.
These are fairly healthy cats.
Living Conditions
These cats form a very strong bond with their family and are highly adaptable t various households. However, they will do best in a house with a constant companion, either canine, feline or human.
Temperament
Kurilian Bobtails are easy going cats with an outgoing temperament. They are intelligent, independent and sociable cats that have a very inquisitive and playful nature. They are highly trainable and lack any aggression. They love their people and are highly devoted to them. Most of the times, they are either on their owner’s lap or sleeping in their bed. They can also be very jumpy and will sit on the highest point in the house, probably to examine their surroundings. Being highly trainable, they need to be told only once what is acceptable and what is forbidden. They can form deep bonds with their owners and can adapt easily to various households.
