LaPerm was one of the kittens in a litter of four produced by a brown tabby named Speedy in The Dallas, Oregon in 1982. This kitten had tabby markings on her skin, was bald and her ears were widely spaced. More or less, she looked like an alien. When her coat finally began to develop, she looked even weirder because her coat was curly. This kitten was named ‘Curly’ and she eventually went on to produce her own litter with neighborhood cat. All the offspring shared the mother’s genetic mutation. Eventually, these curly-coated breeds sought a different status and this is how they got the name LaPerm.

Standard Physical Characteristics

The LaPerm is medium sized cat with long legs and medium-boning. They are well-muscled cats without extremes. The head is a modified wedge with gently rounded contours. The eyes are ears of LaPerm stand out. The eyes are bright and almond-shaped and look at you with certain innocence even if they have a mischief planned. The large cupped ears have ringlets and curly tufts around the base. Their light and soft coat sets them apart. It consists of light, airy and bouncy curls. The coat has a textured feel to it and can be either longhaired or shorthaired. The whiskers are long and curly too.

Care, Grooming and Health

The curly coat of LaPerm doesn’t shed much or mat. It can be kept tangle free by combing twice or thrice a week. Longhaired coats need more combing. Use a comb with revolving teeth for best results.
