History and Domestication

The Redbone Coonhound is a descendent of the red hounds brought by Irish and Scottish immigrants to North America during colonial times. This breed was recognized in 1900s. While other varieties of coonhounds were bred primarily for particular functions, the Redbone was developed for its solid and flashy color. As soon as the color was achieved, they were bred for hunting and performance.

Standard Physical Characteristics

This is a strong, handsome and robust breed. The head is well-modeled and clean and has a medium stop between the nose and brow. The ears are long and hanging and reach the tip of the nose; the paws are compact and cat-like and have strong pads. The tail is held upright. The skin is rich red in color. The short and shiny coat is smooth. Some of them may have traces of white on their feet and chest.

Care, Grooming and Health

The coat of this dog is short and smooth which requires very less grooming. Occasional brushing will keep the coat gleaming. This breed sheds lightly.

These are hunting dogs and need lots of physical exercise. They need to be taken on daily walks or jogs. They are born hunters so they have a tendency to run off after a prey, if not fenced well. Although this is a healthy breed but some of them are prone to hip dysplasia and attention deficit disorder.

Living Conditions

If sufficiently exercised, they will do okay in an apartment. They are relatively inactive indoors and will need a large, fenced-in yard. They also tend to bark a lot, so it is better if you raise them in a noise-tolerant neighborhood. Their all-weather coat allows them to sleep and live outdoors.

Temperament

The Redbone Coonhound is a gentle and merry dog with an even-temper. They are happy dogs and get along well with children. They are affectionate and love their people. They have a strong desire to please their masters. As they are natural hunters, it is easy to train them in following a scent. Like other coonhounds, they are quick, alert and able to hunt and work in all kinds of terrains. They also make excellent water dogs due to their ability to swim. Like any other dog, they need early socialization.
