History and Domestication

The Exotic Shorthair or the Exotic is a Persian with different coat. The breed was developed by crossing the Persian with American shorthair and other shorthaired breeds like the Burmese and Russian Blue. Eventually a cat with the same features and personality as the Persian was created but with a plush and short coat. The breed was recognized by Cat Fanciers Association in 1967 and came to known as the Exotic. These days the Exotics are crossed with Persians and the Himalayans.

Standard Physical Characteristics

The Exotics are heavy boned and massive cats. The round head sits atop a short, robust and square bodies with short and little thick legs. The big round eyes and low set ears give him a sweet expression. The neck is short and thick and very sturdy. The short and thick legs have round and firm paws. The short tail is in proportion to the body.

Care, Grooming and Health

The best advantage of having an Exotic is the ease of grooming. Simple combing or brushing once a week will take care of their coat and remove any dead hair. Wipe their eyes if they are out in the dust as it may lead to excessive tearing which is often seen in this breed. Brush their teeth regularly to avoid any periodontal diseases. Bathe them once in a month but be sure to blow dry later.

Varying incidences of health problems have been spotted in Exotics. Most common health problems are related to their facial structure. Other problems include excessive tearing, heat sensitivity, difficulty in  breathing and skin irritations.

Living Conditions

The Exotics are adaptable and amiable cats and will get along with children and other cat-friendly pets. However, always introduce pets in a controlled manner.

Temperament

Exotics are an easy-going and affectionate breed. This is a gentle cat with the quiet manners of the Persian which make them very endearing. They would ask for your attention with an unwavering gaze and will wrap themselves around you the moment you pick them up. They would lovingly follow you around the house and jump in your lap the moment you sit down. They love playing and will be busy with toys for quite some time. Exotic cats find even the tiniest things very amusing even if it means chasing paper ball. They are sweet and peaceful and a joy to be around. Males are said to be more affectionate than females, who are sometimes called aloof.
