History and Domestication
It is said that he first bobtails to arrive in Japan were a gift from the Chinese emperor. These cats have been known in the island nation for over 100o years and have been described in manuscripts and paintings. The short tails of these cats were natural and the same was set through selective breeding later. Over the years, they became favorites as imperial cats as well as guardians of grain supplies that were invaded by rodents frequently. The most preferred color pattern is the ‘mi-ke’ or tri-colored cats that became associated with good luck.
Standard Physical Characteristics
The Japanese Bobtail is known for its distinguished pom-pom tail that is made of various curves, angels or kinks. No two tails are ever same but can be rigid or flexible. The hair on the tail is longer than the rest of the body giving it a pom-pom appearance. They have a chiseled head structure with angular lines. The high cheekbones and large eyes sit atop a triangular and slanting head. The ears are high-set which emphasize on the inquisitiveness and alertness of this cat. The long and parallel lines along the body and strong, powerful legs give the breed a muscular look. The muscular cats can jump very high and move with graceful movements.
Care, Grooming and Health
Due to their little undercoat, these cats are easy to groom. Both the shorthaired and longhaired varieties need weekly combing to remove dead hair. The undercoat doesn’t tangle very often and a bath is rarely necessary. However, handle their tail gently as it is rather rigid. Brush their teeth regularly.
This is a fairly healthy breed and not many instances of genetic abnormalities have been spotted.
Living Conditions
Due to their high energy levels, Japanese Bobtails make good match for families with kids. They love playing with kids whether it is playing fetch or being paraded around in a baby buggy. The amiable cats get along with cat-friendly dogs.
Temperament
The Japanese Bobtails are charming and affectionate cats. They are intelligent and communicate using their soft ‘chirpy’ voice. When they are not ‘talking’, you will find them playing with some toy or with your aquarium. These cats love playing with water and you will often find puddles around his water dish. These cats are adaptable, smart and playful. They love playing and exploring every corner of your house. Other times, he would be contentedly sitting in your lap.
