The powerfully built cats reach their full maturity in about five years. History and Domestication
The Siberians have been in existence for over 1000 years and proudly serve as the national cat of Russia. These cats were in fact, amongst the first cats to compete in cat shows held in England in 1871. They have been figured in Russian folklores and were prized by shopkeepers and house owners for their hunting abilities. They were excellent in keeping rodents away from food grains. They were first imported to the USA in 1990 and recognized by American Cat Fanciers Association in 1999.
Standard Physical Characteristics
The thick, rich medium-long coat of the Siberian can be attributed to its native country Russia. The stocky and sturdy cats are very large and powerfully built. It has large paws with fur poking out between toes. They mature slowly and usually take about 5 years to reach their full size. The large, round and expressive eyes have a sweet expression and can be green or gold in color. Occasionally, blue eyes can also be spotted. The hind legs are longer than front legs which give them a powerful lift enabling them to jump anywhere they want.
Care, Grooming and Health
The thick, triple coat of a Siberian must be combed at least thrice a week to avoid any tangles. More grooming is required during Spring and Fall, when the coat sheds. A bath is rarely required which is rather an advantage because the coat is water-proof. Brush their teeth regularly and check eyes and ears for any signs of infection.
Siberians are generally healthy cats but the problem of hypertrophic cardiomyoptahy has been seen in them. This is a heart disease which causes heart muscles to enlarge.
Living Conditions
Siberians are bold cats and very good at keeping their composure. This makes them good for families with kids. He would be happy to live with other pets and cat-friendly dogs as long as they respect his authority.
Temperament
Siberians have an incredible intelligence and are always up to something like devising ways to reach their favorite toys. The powerful and agile cats can leap through great distances and sometimes it may appear that they are flying. But despite their large size they are quite adept at it and will not knock down obstacles. They love playing and will entertain you with their clownish antics. They greet visitors warmly and love their humans, especially children.
